Vertical city Asia

The Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition challenges the new paradigm of high-density urban development for a rapidly urbanizing Asian city, Singapore.

The competition site is located in Paya Lebar, Singapore, and its theme “Everyone contributes” focuses on aspects such as community, network, collaboration and circular economy.

To design a master plan that addresses the objective of the competition, we - a team of architect and urban designers from TUDelft - have developed a master plan which is, although based on the current HDB typology of Singapore, further advanced to reflect the essential needs of the contemporary and growing society.

Through our design, we have set up physical space that provides the opportunities for social interaction, socio-spatial networks and ultimately bridging life towards a future of sustained vitality.

From the HDB coalitional network to an ecosystemic integrated network

In an ideal city, everybody and everything contributes as in an integrated ecosystem.

Singapore and in particular HDB towns are planned to create coalition networks. Although the model has proved to be partially successful, it does not answer the new Singaporean society and its need for a more flexible and integrated social network.

To address this, we proposed a master plan which bridges the improving network within the site to the existing network. The proposed bridging network is able to absorb the existing one and further develop new links within the site and with Singapore at large.

The final master plan is pinned by four well-integrated nodes, each with a unique programmatic and spatial mix, illustrates a setting of diverse, integrated programs and socio-spatial network.

Metropolis: A high-density Metropole integrating businesses, residences and transport hubs on the north

Campus: provides educational and lower density housing on the south

Start-up village: supports new creative industries and housing.

Technopolis: enriches neighboring tech industries with high-density housing and a green boulevard to enhance public life.
